Winston County Sheriff's Department First Law Enforcement Agency to Mobilize Self Contained HAZMAT Unit
The Haleyville Rotory Club hosted Winston County's Sheriff Ed Townsend, Investigator Steven Rogers and Deputy Brian Kirkpatrick and learned that the a federal grant from the Homeland Security Department has placed the Winston County Sheriff's Department in the lead to respond to national security threats. Included in these threats are areas considered to be highly toxic such as meth houses. This mobil unit has the responsibility of gathering evidence used to prosecute and convict suspects. The unit is self-contained with everything necessary to collect evidence. All 67 sheriff's signed a mutual aid agreement to share expertise and equipment. Alabama is the only state to do this.
